Samhain has long been marked through ceremony, rituals, and celebrations. Originally, it was likely celebrated by our Iron Age forebears on the 2nd new moon after the autumn equinox. The more typical timing in these modern times is on 31 October. It is a time when the nights are drawing in, the last harvest has been gathered, and we prepare for the long, dark winter months ahead. It is said that the veil thins at Samhain, and so it is a time to connect with our ancestors and to remember those who have gone before.

The dance of flames has called to humans since time began. Our ancestors gathered around fires to share stories, prepare food, and connect with the spirit world. Fire ceremonies create a bridge between worlds; the seen and unseen, the physical and spiritual, the present and the ancient. When we sit with fire mindfully, we open ourselves to the wisdom of those who walked before us, be they people you knew in life or further back in time.

This ritual weaves together three powerful elements: the transformative energy of fire, the medicine of sacred plants, and the eternal connection to our ancestral lines. Whether you choose to work with heart-opening cacao, or a visionary herb such as mugwort known traditionally as the "traveler's herb", this practice offers a pathway to commune with your ancestors in a safe, intentional way.

Setting Your Space

Before beginning any ceremonial work, take time to prepare your sacred space and gather your materials:

  • A safe place for fire (outdoors) or a candle (indoors)

  • Ceremonial cacao (or mugwort tea)

  • A comfortable place to sit

  • A small bowl for offerings

  • Photos or objects connected to your ancestors

Create a small altar or sacred space that, along with the fire, will be a focus for your ancestral connection.

Preparing Your Sacred Drink

Take time to prepare your ceremonial elixir with mindful attention and intention. Allow your thoughts to open up to your ancestors.

For Working with Cacao:

  1. Prepare your ceremonial cacao drink with your preferred liquid

  2. Add a pinch of cayenne to honour the fire element

  3. Optional: cinnamon or chili to enhance the fire energy

  4. Serve in your favourite cup

For Working with Mugwort*:

  1. Steep 1-2 teaspoons dried mugwort in hot water (10 minutes)

  2. Strain and allow to cool slightly

  3. Serve in your favourite cup

*An important note; mugwort is contraindicated for anyone who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant, due to the possibility of inducing uterine contractions

Opening the Sacred Space

The way we begin sets the tone for our entire practice. Find your seat facing the fire or candle, and follow these steps:

  1. Light your candle or fire if you haven't already

  2. Take three deep, grounding breaths; one to connect with the earth, one to connect with the sea, one to connect with the air

  3. Honour and welcome the four directions (East, South, West, North) in a way that feels right for you

  4. Welcome the ancestors and ancestors yet to be, speaking of your intention to connect, remember and seek guidance

The Heart of the Practice

Now we enter the core of our ritual. Each step builds upon the last, creating a natural flow of connection:

  1. Hold your sacred drink between your hands, feeling its warmth

  2. Take three intentional sips:

    • First sip: Honour those who came before

    • Second sip: Honour their wisdom

    • Third sip: Honour their presence

  3. Pour a small libation (offering) onto the earth or into a bowl

  4. Speak the names of ancestors you wish to connect with

  5. If names are unknown, speak your intention to connect with your lineage

The Journey Phase

This is where we sink deeply into connection. Let your gaze soften as you look into the flames. The fire has been a gateway for visionaries and healers throughout time. Allow yourself 10-20 minutes or as long as you feel drawn to:

  • Keep your attention gentle on the flames

  • Notice any images, feelings, or messages that arise

  • Stay open to how your ancestors may appear; through sounds, sensations, or memories

  • Trust what you receive, even if it seems subtle at first

Integration and Closing

As your journey naturally comes to its close:

  1. Slowly bring your awareness back to your body

  2. Place your hands on the earth to ground

  3. Thank your ancestors for their presence

  4. Make a final offering to the fire; herbs, grains, or a small portion of your drink

  5. Close your directions and give gratitude

Remember, connecting with our ancestors is not a one-time event but rather a relationship we cultivate over time. Each time you sit with this practice, you strengthen the bridge between worlds. The messages may come in whispers or waves, through clear visions or subtle knowings. Trust your experience, journal what you receive, and allow this practice to evolve in a way that feels authentic to you.

The wisdom of our ancestors flows through our veins, carried in our DNA, waiting to be remembered. Through the ancient elements of fire and plant medicine, we create a sacred space where past and present meet, where healing can flow, and where the timeless wisdom of our lineage can guide us forward on our path.
